Hurricane Melissa is projected to escalate to a uncommon category five hurricane as it shifts towards the Caribbean island, causing deadly rapid inundation and mudslides.

The hurricane, which registered winds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is now shifting northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is anticipated to make landfall by midweek, as reported by meteorological authorities.

Alerts of electricity outages and damage to infrastructure have been announced as this storm generates up to 30 inches of precipitation and sea level surges as high as 13ft above ground. "Find safe refuge immediately," inhabitants have been advised.

Melissa is the 13th named hurricane in the ongoing Atlantic season, which usually concludes in late autumn.

Most Intense Storm Threat

A Category 5 hurricane is the most intense classification, with winds of at least 157mph.

While Melissa is projected to diminish in strength to a Category 4 hurricane before arriving at the island, meteorologists said there was "almost no noticeable change in the general consequences" upon landfall, and that the hurricane will be "just as powerful" when it strikes the nation.

Urgent Readiness Measures

With tropical storm-level winds and rain already expected ahead of it passes over the island's interior - perhaps encompassing the national capital - alerts indicate that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"An extended timeframe of damaging winds and intense precipitation are underway and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding and multiple landslides," urged weather authorities.

The nation's leader Andrew Holness stated: "I realize that there are many Jamaicans who are concerned, who are extremely apprehensive, and appropriately: worry is natural.

"But the optimal approach to handle anxiety and any apprehension and anxiety is to be prepared."

Inhabitants are being told to protect their properties with sandbags and plywood sheets, and to gather necessary supplies.

Warnings are also ongoing for regions of the neighboring country encompassing the capital, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and Cuba's eastern region, where Melissa is expected to bring similar effects by the middle portion of the coming week.

Landslides currently triggered by the hurricane have caused two deaths in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Projected Course

This weather system is forecast to move across the island nation by Wednesday before passing across the Antillas Mayores and emerging into the open ocean.

By the time it arrives at Cuba, it is forecast to have weakened to a Category 3 storm.
