An extensive extended journey around the Land Down Under is being halted in the wake of the death of an elderly female passenger who was stranded by the ship on a distant coastal location.

The passenger had been trekking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the vessel, but parted ways from the excursion for a break. The vessel departed without her and came back several hours later after the crew discovered the passenger was not present.

A large-scale rescue mission found her remains the next day.

Authorities are examining the tragedy, in coordination with police and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the cruise operator stated that passengers and crew on the ship were told that the continuation of the cruise had been called off due to the "sad loss and previous mechanical issues".

In a statement, he added that travelers would be provided a full refund, and said the organization was working "to organize the homeward trips of the passengers via private aircraft".

Authorities also released an updated statement, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Captain" banning any new passengers from boarding the vessel.

The representative said that they would inspect the vessel in Cairns upon its return.

Sequence of Occurrences

The liner first departed Cairns on October 24th, and was just two days into the expedition at the time of the 80-year-old's passing. Lizard Island was the first stop on the journey.

Travelers on the ship - who generally pay substantial amounts of money to take part in the expedition - were ferried there for a day trip with the option of hiking or underwater exploration.

Relatives Reaction

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her loved ones was "shocked and distressed that the liner left Lizard Island after an organised outing without my mum".

Through her comments, she portrayed her parent as an "vigorous octogenarian" who was a member of a bushwalking group.

"Based on limited facts we have been provided, it appears that there was a lapse of attention and ordinary reasoning," she stated.

She continued that she desired the inquiry would be able to determine what "the operator should have performed that might have preserved Mother's being".

"According to reports from the police that it was a very hot day, and mum became unwell on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"They requested her to head down, alone. Then the ship sailed away, apparently without performing a headcount.

"At a certain moment in that process, or shortly after, mum succumbed, alone."

Company Position

Through an announcement, the Chief Executive affirmed that the operator was "collaborating extensively with authorities to assist their examination".

He said that the organization was "extremely apologetic that this has occurred" and had provided its full support to the relatives.

Shipping Sector Standards

The ship caters for up to one hundred twenty travelers with forty-six staff, according to official information. It was specifically designed to enter isolated locations of the Australian shoreline and is fitted with "tenders" - small boats used to take travelers on land visits.

Occurrences of this nature are uncommon, and passenger vessels have procedures to track which travelers are embarking or leaving, according to maritime specialists.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] onboard just isn't an possibility," an authority commented.

Shipping companies regard these processes with great importance and have "advanced technology in place to prevent such incidents from taking place," the expert added.

"This appears to be presumably a shocking - and sad - one-off."
